Selling out?

I was having a discussion with someone on whether or not an indie band/artist "sells out" when you hear their song in a commercial. For example, Iron and Wine's version of "Such Great Heights" in the M&M commercial. Or I've been hearing a Louis XIV song in a shoe commerical or some similar product.

Is it a new way for lesser knowns to get their music heard, or is it selling out? Is it comparable to having your song on The O.C. or some other TV show?

PS- I hate The O.C.

I dunno; but you know what I WOULD really dig? If some cool artist did a teched~up version of that "Somebody Save Me" themesong for the Clarke Kent/Young Superman show with that hunky boy on it. Yeah....Rock on to "Somebooooody Saaaaaave Me!" song. Yep.

What I think is funny is that it matters to some people that their favorite band makes money. I've never thought being poor (myself) made me any more or less cool - why would you care if other people like the same music you like and/or the band is making a living making music?

Please tell me you've heard Louis XIV in the Payless commercial.
Hello apocolypse.

Ya, it was Payless. Thank you. I couldn't think.

it seems to me more often not that people always have a problem with making money unless they are the ones making it.

i'll admit it kinda throws me for a loop when i hear a killer song being used to sell stuff. there's a car ad with AC/DC, one of my favorite bands that rubbed me the wrong way a bit. but then it reminds me why i don't watch much TV.

what ever happened to the age old glory of the commercial jingle though? that's the question!
