MN Rollergirls tonight

Minnesota Rollergirls bout tonight at Roy Wilkins Auditorium here in St. Paul.

Info you may want to know:
PRETTY IN PUNK
Friday, March 24, 2006
6:30pm doors, 7:30pm bout

Dagger Dolls vs. Garda Belts
Atomic Bombshells vs. Rockits

The half-time entertainment will be provided by local band The Cardinal Sin.

They're expecting a large crowd tonight, so don't come strolling in late. Last bout was almost a full house! If you want to hang with the MN Rollergirls after the bout, they always have a post-bout party at Station 4 here in St. Paul.

I'll see you there. I'll be the one yelling outrageous claims into the microphone at half time.

You know, guys, not to be critical and I'm sure that this is all ironic, post-modern and wink-wink-nudge-nudge, but if this is a Current-sponsored event, something like this is going to add fuel to the fire of the classical music ultrapurists who are still complaining over at the About MPR Forum about WCAL going away, along with all of their other Bill-Kling-Is-Evil junk.

If you were Cities or Live or even Radio K, I wouldn't make a note about this. But it just seems to me that Roller Derby is something that *any* MPR service should stay far, far away from, outside of a feature story during the local segments on "ME" or "ATC." Just for your own safety, you know.

Sorry, but that's the way I feel.

I see your point, but disagree.

The Minnesota Rollergirls is not an evil commercialized entity, but it is an example of an effective grass roots non-profit organization. Sure, the local players and music rock, but the profits are donated to various local charities.
Further, the Minnesota Rollergirls strongly promote local music, providing local bands the opportunity to play for a large and diverse audience during the bout half-times as well as the various events associated with Rollergirls.

The relationship between The Current and Minnesota Rollergirls appears to be natural, and one that both can benefit from. It will be relationships like these that aid The Current, and MPR, in helping Gen X/Y move past that overwhelming image of MPR stuffiness, resulting in lifelong members drawn from that large population of youth.
