Lucia's Wild Kingdom Keeping in mind that I am a wicked city mouse anything that's not a squirrel or a pigeon seems exotic to me.
There are quite a few in the metro, seems like most people don't notice them though. On Christmas Eve Day we had a couple bald eagles in the neighborhood, just hanging out in a tree down the block - this about a block off Hiawatha Ave. What's been freaking me out is there have been hundreds of crows flying across the UofM campus every night while I'm waiting for the bus. I started having flashbacks to the first time I saw "The Birds". It's kinda creepy. I think they're then hanging out along the River Road in the trees. Hey Frick...make that THOUSANDS of crows!! They do roost along the river I drive that way to work every day and try to time it so I see them, it is an amazing sight. Also seen a few Eagles along the river, one used to fly above the golf course there by the Lake Street bridge and flew just over my car like 6 feet above me one day...I felt blessed! I saw that this morning too, at about 42nd street maybe? Definitely wasn't expecting wildlife during rushour. Red-tailed Hawks - last summer when my son was playing baseball, there were up to 5 of these guys at the home field...the largest one was known as "Shoeless Joe". They seemed to like baseball and had a large nest in one of the light towers. Pretty cool beans... Could be a hawk or an eagle. You'd be surprised at the variety of wildlife that can be found in the twin cities area. I volunteer at the Wildlife Rehab Center in Roseville, and last year we rehabbed a River Otter that had been hit by a truck. I think it was found in Anoka County. Mary, have you ever driven Hwy 36 through Maplewood? There's a very large bald eagle nest right next to the highway, by Keller Lake. They have a eaglets every spring, and the parents hang around the nest, quite visible from the highway below. It's on the right hand side if you are traveling Eastbound. (PSA: Be sure that you are NOT the person behind the wheel when you look for urban wildlife...) And the bald eagles seen near Hiawatha are probably nesting near the river (I live in Longfellow, also!). A big reason that the twin cities can support this kind of wildlife is that we have a lot of water. I see the exact same hawk everyday on the lamp post, and it seems odd to me that noone else noticed, until now.... |
