A Friend Indeed

On a personal and professional level, the news was miserable this morning. Our friend Bob Feldman died yesterday. For over 20 years Bob swam against the tide as president of an independent record label - Red House Records in St. Paul. In that role he made a lasting contribution to the music scene in Minnesota, nationwide and around the world.
Bob had a sensitive ear and an unquenchable enthusiasm for the artists on his label and elsewhere. He was a frequent guest host on The Morning Show and did his own weekly broadcast (Urban Folk) on KFAI. In our private and public conversations, I never heard him say an unkind word about a musician. He was invariably supportive – which is not to say he liked everything he heard, but I think Bob genuinely admired people who could sing, play and write songs, whether he chose to work with them or not.
He was a true music fan who simply wanted to share what he had found, and he did it in spite of astounding odds against the success of small record labels in the 80’s, 90’s and today. Those with equal energy but less heart would have given up early. Bob didn’t. Maybe he couldn’t. Bob Feldman’s impulse to spread around the music he loved turned out to be a great gift that we’ll continue to enjoy, even as we mourn his passing.

I was stunned to hear the news. I always enjoyed listening to Bob and the music he would bring in when he served as a guest host. I hope your tribute to him on The Morning Show continues for a while.

My condolences go to Beth and Ari. I think of Bob like a honey bee whose life was devoted to pollenating the fruits of talented musicians. It was a great shock to hear of his loss, & I'll miss hearing him on the air.

I became a grandmother on January 6. My new grandson, Andrew, will be the third generation in the family to fall asleep to, wake up to, play to, work to, and live with Red House Records' music. Just yesterday I was holding Andrew and singing "we're walking aorund the house," Gorka lyrics from a tune he wrote for his son. As I welcome Andrew, this new soul, to our great big crazy world, I say goodbye to another - Bob Feldman. I hope Red House does another "Nod to Bob," of all the tunes he especially loved in this, the 25th anniversary year. Thank you, Bob, for the music, but thanks even more for being the catalyst, the connecting point, the background noise, the the muse, without whom there would be no audience. Peace to you, and comfort to Beth, Ari and all who knew and loved you well.

The death of Bob Feldman is a shocking loss to a community that treasures the role of living artists. We owe much to Bob's vision and to Red House Records for energizing our world. Dale and Jim Ed are to be thanked for offering so spontaneously a tribute to Bob Feldman's great endeavors.

I was deeply saddened to hear that we lost our friend Mr. Feldman. The gifts he gave us through Red House Records are genuinely splendid indeed. His musical visions were truly a blessing to all of us longing to hear the sounds of the true artist and not that of the corporate musical industry. Thank you MPR for introducing him to me as well as many other listeners. He was the guest that I most looked forward to hearing on the Morning Show.

Bob was a great friend. He was always generous to me and my family. Our lives are richer for having known him. I will miss his radio voice on KFAI and his guest spots on the Morning Show. Listening to him always made me feel special. The John Gorka song he picked for the opening song on his Urban Folk show is great. I would listen to the archived shows just to hear that song and then know that Bob's voice would be on air soon. Thanks, Bob.

Although I had never met Bob Feldman in person I felt as though I knew him as I am sure many, many listeners do. He would have been a pretty cool person to hang out with especially if you were a budding young musician. He projected the musician' heart even though he did not play or record himself. Bob was the quintisential music lover.

I didn’t know Bob Feldman very well, but I do know the music that he made possible. I'm grateful to him for bringing the sounds of Greg Brown, Claudia Schmidt, Peter Ostroushko, Robin and Linda Williams, Prudence Johnson and others into my life. My heart goes out to Beth, Ari and his many close friends.

I was sad to hear of our loss of Bob Feldman. Thanks to him and the Morning Show I have many Red House records in my collection. He, Dale and Jim Ed have given me a wonderful expansion to my musical tastes. Since moving to Colorado I realize now what a treasure we had on the MN public radio. Listners, don't take it for granted. Thanks Bob for my love of all music.

Getting to the January 12th show a little belatedly (I've lived in NC the past 4 years and so now listen online when I can—thank you, MPR). Reading over the playlist merely confirms how much of my favorite music comes to me via Red House (thank you, Bob), via the Morning Show (thank you, Dale and Jim Ed). And, if memory serves, it was Bob and Red House that hosted some outdoor, all-day concerts in various parks around the Twin Cities once upon a time. In any case, I know that Red House will continue as a living legacy to the vision of Bob Feldman.
