musichead films?

Finally got to see "Walk the Line" today, matinee with the missus...a nice bonus of my schdule, we were alone in the cinema, felt like a private screening! Anyway I had a lot of calls and a few emails when it first came out saying how good it was but nothing prepared me for HOW good it was! Had tears streaming down my face at the end, what a love story!?!? But it was also a great movie showing how the private life of a performer plays into their performance, something that we can easily forget when going to see a show. Not many movies have rewarded a musichead like this one did, can you suggest any others? Santa's going to bring me a DVD player (i hope!)and I'd love to have some suggestions for good rock'n'roll movies or DVD's?
HAPPY SOLSTICE!!

These are mostly documentaries, but they're definitely worth having:

End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones
The Filth and the Fury (Sex Pistols)
The Nomi Song (documentary about Klaus Nomi)

Mockumentaries:
All You Need is Cash: The Rutles
This is Spinal Tap (of course)
A Mighty Wind

Quadrophenia, which includes Sting's debut acting performance. I'm more reluctant to recommend Tommy, though it has kitch value for the performances by Tina, Elton & Eric.

Excellent suggestions by Frick...

"24 Party People" is also a must have.

"The Decline of Western Civilization" is a great documentary on the early years in LA Punk - great clips of X and Fear during their formative years. Hard to believe the director, Penelope Spheeris, went on to direct such classics as "The Beverly Hillbillies".

"The Unheard Music" is also a great documentary on X.

Unfortunately, the "Decline of Western Civilization" is out of print, at least the one you're talking about is, unless she's somehow managed to put it out again. The second one "The Metal Years" might still be available in VHS.

Although not available on DVD except as an Import, and seemingly out of print on VHS, if you can find it in one of the hipper video stores, one of my favorite “Rock n’ Roll” movies is “Leningrad Cowboys Go America”. It’s a Finnish film about a (supposedly real) rock band that gets sent to America to play “Wrock und Wroll” IMO, worth seeking out as it’s a very funny film. Here’s a Photo of the band

The Complete Beatles - I think this is the best documentary about the group, far superior to 'Anthology' and many others. Bonus: Malcolm MacDowell narrates it.

Westway to the World - The story of the Clash as compiled by Don Letts. 'Nuff said.

Stop Making Sense - Talking Heads in their prime. Big suit, big band, big impact. Check out their performance of "This Must Be The Place," it's pure magic.

I forgot "Hard Day's Night". Put that on the list.
