Trust me I know what I'm doing. Last week when I interviewed Neil Gaiman he mentioned Elvis Costello as an artist that he trusts to make good records. He basically said he didn't like EVERY record Elvis puts out, but as an artist he trusts him enough that he will make another record that eventually he will love.
I know he's a box of rocks, and pretty much always too high to remember the words to his own songs, but Evan Dando is a song writer that I trust to make honest pop songs. I trust The Melvins, Jello Biafra, Radiohead, Greg Dulli, Bardo Pond, Spiritualized, Mogwai, DJ Shadow... there's more. But there are artists I trusted, and the albums that let me DOWN. NIN - Everything after The Downward Spiral The Kingsbury Manx - "Aztec Discipline" just couldn't compare to the first two, though the new album is pretty good. Daft Punk - "Human After All" These guys still have SOMETHING, but it's not what it was, man. Sonic Youth - when did these guys get BORING? At least the side-project and reissue stuff is still vital. What about Prince? |
