Making the web site serve you better
July 07, 2005

This week we are in the process of thinking about version 2.0 for two of our web features. First, the events calendar. It has been up and running for a while and we are getting to know its strengths and weaknesses. We had a meeting with several people from music, marketing, and new media to discuss very specifically what we think is working and what we wish we could change. The tireless Mr. Wells will be putting our ideas together into a spec document that we'll study next week. This would be a good time to let us know what features and additions you wish we would incorporate.

Secondly, we are tackling the web playlist. Our goal is to have it working perfectly so that what you see on the web is what is on the air at the moment, 24 hours per day and 7 days per week (or as much as possible). This will involve changes in the underlying technology (mostly software) that drives the playlist and also changes for the humans involved.

Right now, the departments involved are making a work flow chart that shows all of our processes as they now exist and where we'll need to intervene in order to make everything work like it should. Again, if you have some ideas about the web playlist this would be the moment to voice them. I am in charge of being "the customer" - which means I get to decide what "the customer" (end user) wants in this instance. We'll design to those specs. So have at it.

We're going to fix the playlists for both The Current and the Classical Music Service, so music listeners of all stripes will have better access to better information soon. But not too soon. I don't want to give a promised date just yet. When we have one, you'll be the first to know.

In preparation for the launch of The Current, I listened to KEXP a few times. I really liked their "Mini-Playlist" - a small browser window that contains only the playlist for the last 3-5 songs. I'd love to see that feature duplicated here at The Current. I'm within broadcast range so I listen on the radio but I would keep a mini-playlist running in the background on my computer if it was available.

Just now I started listening online and Mary Lucia is doing an interview with a band. I have no idea who she is talking to, because your playlist shows the last song played and doesn't tell me who she's interviewing. So I'm really not going to listen and plan to switch to KEXP. KEXP has a great playlist, and it allows for DJ comments--I'd use them as your goal to emulate.

In the meanwhile, maybe you could fix your playlist to show not only songs but who is being interviewed.
