The joys of PowerPoint
May 16, 2005

Happy Monday.

Steve, Thorn, and I are working on a couple of things on the big "to do" list this week.

First, we have another long planning meeting this afternoon to talk about our major programming for the next several months. We're planning some concerts and events, and some special on-air programs.

Also, Steve and I are going to the AAA Non-Comm conference later this week. You can read about it on the web if you go to the Triple A Radio web site. Once you're there, you'll see that we are going to hear quite a bit of music! I think the music starts at 7:00 AM and lasts until 2:00 AM every day. I am also giving a presentation on 89.3 at a panel about audiences for music stations. Quite a few folks around MPR are helping me put my PowerPoint slides together. I'm going to give the conventioneers a picture of our station, why we put it together, and how things are going.

For practice, we're going to team up on the presentation and give a slightly different version to a group of MPR employees on Wednesday. Then, next Monday, we'll give another version to a group of the station's underwriters.

Say...any chance you could post the presentation when you're done with it? I don't think that I'm alone in wondering how 89.3 looks at its audience.

If you get the chance, read Edward Tufte's "The Cognitive Style of Powerpoint" (http://www.edwardtufte.com/tufte/powerpoint/) for a critique of the failures of Powerpoint in communication. Not available to read on-line, alas - you've got to order it. Still, well worth it.

Hi. I am a huge fan of Tufte and I do own the great book you've recommended, Ian. And Drew, I was actually wondering how I might post the presentation. The thing is, PowerPoint isn't just karaoke - there are words that go along with the pictures....so you'd need me AND the slides to get the whole presentation. That said, let me ponder the possibilities.....Those of you who have been following the station closely might find it really interesting.

What about posting a link on the forum that will pull up a protected copy.

Heh, just record the audio when you present it ;-)
