Adventures in live radio
April 23, 2005

This past week required us to think on our feet a lot. I'm hoping that at least a few of the staff have their feet up this afternoon.

I have to say my week was off to a pretty bad start when my dog, the most human member of the family, was diagnosed with Lyme disease. He was so pathetic when I took him in to the vet - went from his cheerful bouncy self one day to something like a deflated balloon the next. He is taking antibiotics and eating prescription dog food and today, finally, he seems a little better. It's still unclear whether he'll recover. More test results come back on Monday. So, get your pet the Lyme vaccine NOW.

The 89.3 staff had a series of what you could call "adventures" that I won't describe in too much detail. Here's the general flavor. To draw the picture you need to start with construction workers cutting holes into the ceiling, and continuing to saw bricks off the building just outside our windows. Read: loud. (Sometimes you can actually hear this on the air.) And then add things like a crown falling out of our producer's tooth just as a live band was about to start playing, resulting in instant, excruciating pain, calls to the dentist for immediate assistance, and a scramble to find production help instantly. And needing to replace some hosts on the air on short notice. And not being able to find certain audio that we knew was in the system someplace. Plus Michael Wells had the nerve to go on vacation. And Nelson is still on paternity leave. Then add this: budgets for next year were due Friday. And the Marketing team is out at several events this week-end. And of course you heard DeVotchKa's van broke down near Chicago. And yet ... the radio station sounded good this week, didn't it? Whew!

Tomorrow, April 24th, we'll hit our 3-month anniversary. In some ways it seems like we launched yesterday and in others, it seems like we've been doing this forever. Thanks for all your support and good cheer. It means a lot to all of us!

Well, I think the Current sounds great everyday -- so the skid-marks in the office last week didn't upset the airwaves that much!
The Morning Show is still as great as it ever was on KSJN (perhaps even a little better, if I may say so), and Mary Lucia is an absolute gem.
Keep up the marvelous work!

I'm playing the world's tiniest violin.
