Monday Music
April 04, 2005

Thorn and Steve are in Steve's office right now with the door closed, listening to music. They have been in there for quite a while -- they have one of those white plastic bins from the post office that is completely filled with newly-arrived CDs, and they appear to be going through them one by one to hear what's there. Looks fun. And I hear some laughter.

Meanwhile I'm enjoying Mary in the afternoon. She swapped air shifts with Steve Seel today. It's always interesting to hear a DJ at a different time, because they change that part of your day into something new.

Upstairs, the cellist Matt Haimovitz is recording St Paul Sunday. He's playing at the Dakota tonight at 7:00 and 9:00. Matt is an interesting artist who is trying to break down some of the barriers between musical genres - doing this in part by playing classical music in different types of spaces, and also by mixing up what he plays. Have you heard his version of Jimi Hendrix Anthem?

The New York Times had an article on Haimovitz last year that began with this wonderful sentence: "Acclaimed cello soloists rarely come through Jackson [Mississippi], and when they do, they almost never perform at Soulshine Pizza."
