New faces around the shop
March 14, 2005

We have some new people working on 89.3 and I'd like to introduce them to you.

Derrick Stevens is starting tomorrow as 89.3's production manager. Derrick is a Minnesota native whose involvement in broadcasting began at KBEM as a student at North High School in Minneapolis. He has been a DJ on KMOJ and KTTB and is known for his voice over work for a variety of clients. Over the past years he has been a free-lance producer working with area businesses, promoters, and radio stations.

Kevin Beacham joins the 89.3 crew as host of a new hip hop specialty show on Saturday nights at 11:00 PM called Redefinition Radio. Kevin works with Rhymesayers and for seven years had a radio show at WNUR in Chicago.

Last but not least, 89.3 has a new marketing and membership crew member, Ali Lozoff. Ali comes to Minnesota Public Radio from the Science Museum of Minnesota where she worked on special events. Before that she worked at the Walker Art Center. While a student at the University of Minnesota, Ali served as Radio K's Marketing Director. Ali's long history with the Minneapolis-St Paul music scene is a huge plus for the new station.

We're going to have a busy week around here and we'll be writing web logs like crazy. Thorn is going to write the web log from South by Southwest later this week, while I go to a conference at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Never a dull moment!

Thanks for listening.

Quick correction: Kevin used to work for *W*NUR in Chicago (actually, Evanston, since it's Northwestern University's station). East of the Mississippi, most call letters start with "W."

And I hope the appearance of Kevin's show will shut up City Pages for a while.

You are absolutely right about WNUR! Through the wonders of technology I will go into the system and fix that. Thanks for the heads up

Hear, hear Mark....

I wonder if any station has undergone such scrutiny in the first 6 mos as this station. I wish people would keep the kvetching to a period where a station obviously refuses to grow. People seem to forget that, while this station seems to grow by leaps and bounds, the other stations have kept to the same old same old.

I think it might show real journalism if the Pages took the time to "out" the Clear Channel stations of the cities. Oh wait, that might REQUIRE some journalism.

Forgive me

Not only adding a hip-hop show, but one hosted by Kevin Beacham is a huge plus for the FM Radio dial as a whole. The Twin Cities has been very prolific and alive in the hip hop community and its good that The Current recognizes this...

In fairness to the City Pages, they _have_ railed against ClearChannel, everybody's favorite radio boogeyman, for some time.

And quite frankly, I thought their articles did talk about some areas where The Current _had_ been lacking. Doesn't change the fact I love listening to the Current or the News and Information Service, but MPR at large can certainly take a little bit of brow-beating from the local press.

And what has NPR done in the midst of their normal work? Why, they've gone and done something about it. Good for them.

...and when I say NPR, I mean of course MPR...

I love the station but have been lamenting the lack of urban music in the mix. Now, I can't wait to hear what the new DJs have to throw down. I'm certain the listenership will grow even more....

Small gripe bcs I love the station. But please, please, solve the glitch and have the published playlist match what is actually played.

Scott -
Take a look at our existing playlist thread on the Forum:
