Thorn and the Fund Drive
March 02, 2005

We are enjoying the fund drive. It has been busy and we're hearing from a lot of new listeners to 89.3. Yesterday and today I am working with Thorn in the studio as a producer. Exactly what does that mean? We go over things to talk about, I bring him information about who's phoning in and what they're saying, I help him answer the studio phone, and in general offer support. Also, our fund drive director can come in to talk to me about things that are going on with the fund drive, like new special offers, without disturbing Thorn.

Usually, Thorn is in the studio by himself. He has some odd preferences and generally he's the only one who knows about them. For example, he keeps the studio at refrigerator temperature (it's freezing - took me several hours to warm up after spending three hours in there on Tuesday). Also he likes to work in the near dark. Sort of a bat cave atmosphere, between the cold and the dark. But, whatever works for Thorn, works for me. He's a great DJ and we've been having a lot of fun listening to music and sharing it with all of you. Please call and become a member if you haven't joined yet (or join via the web site). By joining now, it's like voting for the station -- and every vote counts!

This week we're putting the finishing touches on a new web-based community music calendar. Soon, all of the concerts in town will be quickly available on the 89.3 web site with a lot of useful search functions. Once it's launched I hope you'll let us know what you think of it - we want it to be comprehensive and easy to use so that all of our listeners can go to the web site and quickly learn about live music available in the region. It should be ready to go before the end of the week.

One more note (pardon the pun). We have been getting a lot of email, letters, and telephone calls from high school and college students. Their requests vary - some want to interview Steve or another staffer for their school newspaper, others are doing research projects about radio, and still others want us to participate in career fairs. We are happy to respond to these requests so please keep 'em coming!

Thorn seems to be part DJ part Dr Death

Maybe he has to stay cold because he's actually a human incubator?

Thorn Incubus

Good luck with the fund drive

Thorn likes his studio like he likes his women... uhm... cold and only partially lit, I guess.

Glad to hear the drive is going well and interest is high... keep the calls & clicks comin', folks!

Ouch Andrew.
Hopefully you're a pal of Thorn's. Although, as they say, with friends like that...

Do you think making fun of Thorn's strange habits will help increase pledges? Or, is the monotony of the drive getting to everyone? Either way, good humor.

Hang in there y'all.

Not making fun of Thorn. Just here to provide a little window into life at the new 89.3!

Sorry Sarah, I didn't mean to sound snide. I love the tales of life over there, keep 'em coming!

Wow. I mean, Wow!

I'm all set to pick up the phone and
renew my MPR membership. All set. I mean,
the phone is in my hand.

And then Thorn makes his crack about how
the plaque listing the "Current" Founding Members will be prominently displayed. "Like the Vietnam
Memorial".

Wow.

But he's not done. No, not this hipster Thorn.
He's not done. He goes on to make a crack or two more about how founding members are doing their part for posterity.

Wow.

Ever been to the memorial, Thorn? I mean,
ever go to D.C., strap on your Doc Martins,
throw on one of those ironic t-shirts, and
check out the memorial?

Anything off limits Thorn?

Coooool. Very cooooool.

I put down the phone.

In addition to the form I submitted a while ago, I'd like to offer my time for developing/testing new web functionality. I currently work around the country for the man (Accenture), but would love to lend a hand where it's needed.

Feh. Quick, visualize a huge wall of names! What do you see?

Thorn's just a human being with one of these screwy brains we have.
