Why not call us?
February 04, 2005

We've established a phone line where you can call in, and leave us comments about 89.3. We'll be listening to these every day and we might play some of them on the air. Just call 651-290-1535.

Yesterday and today were action packed. Steve, Thorn, and I had a long meeting with our IT department about some technical issues with the studio set-up, and figured out how to make everything work better. We also had a large meeting with membership, development, underwriting, new media, and IT about the long-term needs of the station. We're in the process of planning our first membership drive, too. Maybe you've read elsewhere on the web site that we are creating a limited edition vinyl release for Founding Members of the station. Bands have been coming in to record and we hope to include some original tracks.

Speaking of which, Dan Wilson was in the studio today playing some great new songs, and you'll hear his new work on 89.3 sometime soon. I sat around the control room watching our engineers Tom and Scott set up for the session and listening to all the tweaks and turns required to make the best possible mix. It's an amazing education to watch skilled engineers go about their work, and to see how musicians listen and talk about what they're hearing and how they want things to sound. I learn a lot every time I can sit down and pay attention to the intricacies of their job. Plus, the more you watch and listen, the more you appreciate what a huge difference a great engineer can make.

I'm taking a couple of days off next week so there'll be a little break in the web log. When I get back I'll tell you about my trip! See you Thursday morning, and thanks for listening.

Okay, this may sound like the dorkiest, non-music fan comment ever, but any chance the cool sounding limited edition vinyl album for founding members would be available on CD? I'm one of those young people who hasn't seen a record player in 15 years and wouldn't have a clue where I could even go play one.

Of course the chances of me slapping down the dough to become a founding member are slim--I don't have that kind of money lying around--but the idea of some exclusive music like that is appealing.

Ooh, another random question: what would it take for 89.3 to not need to do a pledge drive? I imagine that would mean lots of people donating money now, when you're not asking for it, right?

I can at least answer your question about the LP: there will be a CD shipped that has the same content as the record. My understanding, though, is that the CD will only be available in the Founding Member package and not as a stand-alone thank you gift for contributing.

Hey folks -

In regard to pledge drives; what about a music festival as a fund-raiser? Would it feasible?

Hey Michael!! It is my opinion that this site could use a Java Chat!! That way, folks could discuss the music as it's being played without inflating the Forums exponentially.
You can pick them up for free..

On the subject of pledge drives:

Doesn't it seem more appealing that you only have to listen to "commercials" for a couple of weeks out of the year than to listen to them repeatedly throughout the day?

I, for one, would rather have commercial-free radio the other 49-50 weeks of the year. If this station is as important to some people as it seems, we can all give up one small thing worth $10/month to keep it going.

It is my understanding (based on experience listening to KNOW) that if the goal is met, the pledge drive ends early. I guess we could cut that pledge time down if we all pitched in and renewed on a timely basis.

In case people out there don't know, you CAN make monthly payments. I do and I'm a pround founding member (first day).

I have listened all today for the first time. Wow! You nailed it. This is type I radio we've been starving for!

Before I start, I want to emphasize that I LOVE this station. We have our newly-acquired clings in the car window.

Couple suggestions: a bit less of the Eliot Smith. I like him, but it seems like I hear him really often.

Other ideas for branching out; I'll bet people who listen would be open to hearing this stuff even if it doesn't fit in a specific category. These are some artists/CDs I have added to my music library over the years, as I have tried to expand my musical taste:

Miles Davis
"Triplets of Belleville" soundtrack
"O Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack (I know you're already playing Alison Krauss)
Django Reinhardt with or w/o Stephane Grapelli
Duke Ellington
Louis Armstrong
Cab Calloway
Dave Brubeck
Son House (have I heard him already?)
Komeda
Mingus
Prima
Edith Piaf
Artie Shaw

Mary,
That is a very good list of Jazz. They totally should play (some Django with and without Grappelli), Mingus (something from Mingus Ahum), Brubeck (something off Time Out).

It also would be great if they played some Jazz-Fusion ala Mahavisshun Orchestra and Return to Forever.

Kevin,

Did you know you can become a founding member without having to pay $120 upfront? MPR will bill you in 12 monthly installments of $10 each. That's less than the price of one CD each month! Only $.33 a day--half the price of a can of pop or a candy bar.

Maybe the Current could increase is membership by promoting this option more....

This is the one station where I consistentally here good music. Including intelligiant rap. Keep up the good work and dont slip into mainstream music to much even once your an establishment.

Just a couple of comments about my beloved morning show. First the music mix is a little less eccentric and that is ok, but (second) you guys don't seem to be talking as much as you used to. I've been listening ever since the beginning and it's alway been about the talk not the music, so quit playing so much music, I can get that on my iPod.

this is a very odd question, and i feel like a heel for asking but is there any way one can check on the status of their membership? i joined up at the $10/month option and had a computer blip while finalizing the process. i've recieved confirmation that all the financial stuff went through, but i don't know if my choice of membership gift went through.

the lp/cd is most certainly not the reason i joined, but it is a very nice incentive and i'd just like to make sure everything is a-ok with my stuff.
