Where our name came from
January 28, 2005

Yesterday we had a meeting of the entire MPR staff - we do this four times a year, after each of the quarterly Board meetings. The Board meeting was Wednesday afternoon. At both of these meetings I gave a report on the 89.3 launch. To prepare for the presentations, everyone helped me pull together some data about audience reaction to 89.3 since Monday's launch.

As of yesterday morning, 333 people had joined 89.3 as Founding Members. Thank you! The web stream had been accessed 23,000 times. Wow! More than 350 people have signed up to volunteer. Great! And the DJs have received -- get this -- 2,300 requests for songs. Overwhelming!

Other news: The new Pulse came out with a big interview with the staff. Check it out. Also, Chris Reimenschneider wrote about us in today's Star Tribune. He got one thing wrong. He thinks our Marketing department named our station "The Current." Nope. The radio staff named it. We love the name because The Current has so many meanings. For one thing, we live in cities that have beautiful rivers running through them. We are also on the Plains and so we have wind (and weather). Lightning and electricity come to mind. And, in radio lingo, your "currents" are the new songs you are playing. So once the name sprang to mind, it stuck. Once it stuck, the Marketing department took the name and ran with it. They are amazing creative colleagues in our new endeavor and we just don't think of them as people who "do things to us." They do things WITH us. Big difference.

We have some week-end treats in store for you. Bill De Ville, Tony Lopez, and Jill Riley will crack the mike for the first time. Chris Roberts will have a local music show for you on Sunday evening, with a live visit by the Owls. And you'll have your first chance to hear Sounds Eclectic and American Routes.

See you on the radio.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Cheapo on Snelling Ave. in St. Paul has 89.3 bumper stickers. I picked up two of them at lunch. :-)

I got a bumper sticker at the CD Warehouse (neé Cheapo) in Dinkytown. Heh, I guess I'm not the only person who still thinks of that place as "Cheapo" in their memories, since this website lists the store under that name (at least as of this moment).

This is a comment from yesterday's post. MPR is a milti-million $ corporation, it doesn't need you to "donate" albums, for cryin' out loud. That's just taking advantage of listener's excitment. They don't need your help. If you have all these records to donate, give them to a real independant station like KFAI, who really needs community support. Just *tell* MPR what to buy, they will, and it will help the local record store economy, as that's where they buy them from.

why didn't the station think of/consider calling itself "The COMP" since the CALL LETTERS are K-C-M-P it would have sounded good and actually gone with the the lettering? Heck, it also might have been a good slogan for giving tickets, cds, stickers, away. I dunno, "The COMP" would sound a lot cooler to me than "The CURRENT."

It'd be like COMPLIMENTING your listenors. The other area it suggests for people to stream it sounds very computer oriented.

chris riemenschneider got something wrong?? *gasp* no way! that's completely shocking.... haha.

American Routes at 5-9am Sunday? Phew! That will be tough to get up for... will 91.1 still carry it from 7-9pm on Saturdays? I love American Routes.

And I just wanted to remind everyone that the name 'The Current' still sounds like the name of a junior high amatuer radio club or a small town Gazette. Thank you.

Hey George:
The United Way and the Red Cross are also multi-million dollar corporations. Ya' think we should stop givin' to them to? Geez.

I am glad it's not the Comp. Those words resembling call letters are REAALLY lame especially when they are spelled wrong. I also hate spelling stuff with K's instead of C's, but Krispy Kreme is still good.

To MikeHicks: I like the music, I'll donate to keep the music. Get over it, you remind me of that negative person from the forums that Julia "had to talk to". If you don't want to donate, you don't have to! It's your money. But most of us will donate ;)

Plus there's no commercials.

Posted by: MattAudio at January 28, 2005 05:32 PM

Heh, that was George, not me. I've donated money already myself, and I hope to add to that sometime in the future if I ever get a job again. Plus, I've got an idea for a 12" or two to send in for kicks.

I just dropped a stack of static clings and stickers at Down in the Valley in Crystal. I also bought a Ted Leo and the Pharamasists CD from Mary's urging.
btw- I'm thinking from a marketing perspective- The Current- "eclectric" or "eclectricfing"
....Sorry.....

Wow --
I see that "The Hater" has nothing better to do with his/her time other than torture themselves by listening to a station they hate and then logging on to let everyone know about their masochism.
Could someone please tell me why there is so much negativity coming from people who are not members, not the target audience, not even really listeners...

Are they just Killjoys or is there a master plan?

Oh -- And _I Like_ the Current for a name. It could be worse -- like a single letter...
(refraining -- you can guess the station, I'm sure)...

Seriously, go over all the tag-lines in this town and you'll realize it could be much worse. Some don't even make sense.

I, for one, welcome our new crazy alternative MPR overlord(s). ;)

The current is a decent name. It could be like one of those Disney stations and be Driving us out of our minds with repitition.

And I just wanted to remind everyone that the name 'The Hater' still sounds like the name of a junior high amatuer or a small gazelle who sees the world through a drinking straw. Thank you.

I call this here station 'The Kirnt'. That's Hoosier style.

The Current is the mint in my sweet tea. The sprinkles on my cupcake. The salt on my icy steps. Joy has come!

Posted by: Michele at January 30, 2005 07:39 AM

Oh what'll happen to those old comercial stations!

Posted by: Bruce at February 8, 2005 03:37 PM

Thanks to The Kirnt, I no longer need my IPod in my car! Float On!

Posted by: DBL_DN at February 14, 2005 06:12 PM

I think of the name "The Current" as short for The Current Revolution. The last revolution in local radio was Rev 105. I like the name, when I think about it like that.
