The show will be on MPR's News and Information service, 91.1 in the Twin Cities, or streamed online at www.mpr.org. We've created some audio for the new 89.3 and Bill and Gary will be playing it. Are you going to do an alt country or americana type show? You better be calling Jack Sparks and asking him to bring his other side of country show over from that little station in stillwater. he's all over this stuff and my wife and i love to listen to him every saturday. we liked it better when he was on sunday nights on that fm station, but his show is funny as hell and he plays good music. we might even send in a donation if you can convince him to switch over. Posted by: Tom S. at January 20, 2005 02:16 PMI have been waiting for a long time for an anti-format station and have been keeping my sanity by listening to Radio 6 via the internet. I look forward to the first day and anxiously scan the blog on a daily basis for word of an actual date. I can't wait to be surprised whenever a new song begins. For a person with eclectic tastses like myself, it seems like a godsend to have a radio station in the near future that won't force-feed us with the latest cookie-cutter offering comercially-made music sends us on all other spots on the dial. Posted by: Mick at January 20, 2005 03:14 PMWoohoo! I'm currently listening, and Mr. Kling just divulged that he's going to announce the launch date for 89.3 during this interview! Finally! Posted by: Erik Anderson at January 21, 2005 12:09 PMYeah! Can't wait for Monday morning! Have a *fun* weekend guys. Posted by: Scott at January 21, 2005 12:33 PMHot. Damn. There it is. Monday. Posted by: Drew J at January 21, 2005 12:34 PMWell said, Scott. Can't wait! Posted by: Erik Anderson at January 21, 2005 12:36 PMThankss for listening. Yes, it will be a busy week-end, and we really want to hear what you think come Monday. Only listeners can make a station truly great, and we are humbled by your interest in our launch. I understand the "another rock station" question. As someone who nearly cried for joy upon hearing a sample of KCMP programming and seeing the bios of its staff, I'll tell you how I think it'll serve the community: We'll get to hear new and old music few (if any) other stations play, we'll get a much-needed alternative to Clear Channel ennui, we'll get DJs who are authentic and invested in our community in a way that DJs who don't live here can't be. It's a triumph of the values that deregulation's champions have ignored in favor of fattening their wallets. I for one can't wait for Monday. Thank you thank you thank you, MPR. I will reiterate: will all the millions of dollars MINNESOTA PUBLIC RADIO is spending, they don't even Have the decency to broadcast farm and livestock reports in the morining. No agricultural network. Nothing. KCMP should be broadcasting foreign language programs for the Somali, Vietnamese, Hmong, Russian, and Spanish-speaking communities. They are not.
Correction: The pupose of Minnesota Public Radio is NOT to provide an rock alternative to a commercial broadcasting conglomerate. It is to serve the interests of the people of Minnesota. Posted by: Neal at January 22, 2005 03:03 PMIsn't that what LPFM is going to be about? MPR is going for a larger audience, and a traditional AAA format will hopefully do just that. To have one station be the single sounding board for multiple voices is futile. It's interesting to note that even COMMERCIAL broadcasters are supposed to serve the public, but rarely don't (aside from 2 hours early Sunday morning). So Neal, go gripe to Clear Channel, ABC/Disney, Infinity, Salem, et al., and ask why no farm reports on WCCO? No community events on KDWB? No world music on Cities 97? They are supposed to serve the public too. Why not Russian rock on 93X? Celtic music on KS95? Americana on K102? Don't fault someone who's trying to do their best with the resources they have. Posted by: Christopher at January 23, 2005 10:39 PMBased on the first 6 hours, have to admit I'm pretty disappointed. If this is the format, I'm really sorry to have lost WCAL. Posted by: Les B at January 24, 2005 04:11 PMI don't like the format on Current. If I wanted soft jazz/rock, I'd find it somewhere else. The Morning Show, though, is how I get to work and it just isn't the same. Dale and Jim Ed don't seem to chat like they used to and I can't find The Writer's Almanac; did that get lost in the shuffle? Posted by: Mike F at January 27, 2005 06:58 AMYears ago in Chicago the public radio president Torri Malatia(?)did away with almost all of their good alternative music programing (Thistle and Shamrock, Mambo Express, Sing out Songbag, etc.)to emulate the highly successful format of Minnesota Public Radio. I and others like me felt our interests and concerns simply discarded in pursuit of a broader market share. You know, it'd be more fun if Kling got to go a few rounds with Ali G.
Just saying.
