« Annie Baxter joins the team | Ask the President about the new 89.3 » Cds and Bill DeVilleJanuary 19, 2005 I'm in the dog house. Thorn (music director) gave me a stack of CDs to listen to today, and asked me to name 2 or more tracks from each that we should play on the new 89.3. I spent all day in meetings and I didn't have time to listen to all of them, so I was wondering if you would help me. Which tracks should I give him? The CDs I didn't get to are: Bright Eyes, Lifted, or The Story is in the Soil, Keep your Ear to the Ground And here's some good news. Bill De Ville is joining the 89.3 staff. Bill will be on the air and will also help out with music and production. His deep musical knowledge will be a huge asset to the station. Bill has worked in radio for more than 20 years. You might remember him from his 12 year stint as the overnight host and music programmer on Cities 97. While there, he also hosted Minnesota Music, where he interviewed a number of local music legends like The Jayhawks, Semisonic, Mason Jennings, and Soul Asylum. Bill started his radio career in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and also spent some time at KABL (a Minneapolis based cable radio station). We're excited to have Bill on board and are looking forward to hearing him on the air!

I'd vote for Bright Eyes You Will You Will You Will too and also Lover I don't Have to Love. Posted by: jodi at January 19, 2005 07:37 PMCongratulations to Bill!! I've known about his on air talent and deep musical knowledge since his KABL days on up through Cities' 97. Bill is the perfect fit with your already stellar on air staff. Another very good move KCMP!!! Waiting for that launch date.... Posted by: Janis at January 19, 2005 08:59 PMI agree on the Bright Eyes: "You will, you will, etc." is a great song. I make it a staple of mix discs when I introduce someone to Bright Eyes music. I'd also suggest "Nothing Gets Crossed out." It's such a dynamic song, quiet and fragile in the beginning with some sweet boy-girl harmonies and growing to a big orchestrated sound that washes over you. Posted by: Dane at January 19, 2005 09:09 PMYES...Bill Deville will make a great addition to the KCMP on-air staff. He made Cities 97 worth listening to late-nights with Cities Underground. Cheers Bill! Posted by: Christopher at January 19, 2005 09:37 PMoff the Luna cd: Malibu Love Song I am looking forward to this new experience in radio. From suggestions in various blog comments, I have been sampling other online sites (WOXY, KEXP, KCRW). I can already feel my horizons broadening. That said, I hope that there will be diversity to the programming on 89.3. I fear that The Morning Show will be the only source for roots music and "urban folk" (to steal Bob Feldman's KFAI show title). The passion of alternative fans is palpable and fierce. There is room for blues, Americana, folks AND new music. My wish for the new station is that we can all get along. Can't wait! Posted by: MM at January 19, 2005 11:27 PMRegarding the Bright Eyes record: I strongly disagree with "You Will..." on the grounds that it takes two and a half minutes to get to where it's going (the crash of instruments towards the end), and only stays there for 50 seconds. Not that it's a bad song, just that there's little payoff for the radio listener. "Bowl of Oranges" would be great, if it cut off after about the first three minutes, since the rest is mostly ambience. "From a Balance Beam" is another more heavily produced, enjoyable track. Among the looser songs, "Make War" has a wonderfully memorable melody in the chorus. "Waste of Paint" affects me powerfully every time I hear it, and the long, rambling verses suggest Bob Dylan. Posted by: Andy at January 19, 2005 11:39 PMAnother nod for the first three minutes of "Bowl of Oranges" and also "Lover I Don't Have to Love". (Note to webmaster: The modified "non-popup, non-styled, inline with article" comments display is nearly impossible to read.) Posted by: Rob at January 20, 2005 12:29 AMThe best track off of Luna's Rendezvous is "Astronaut," one of the best tracks they've ever written. It first appeared in a different form on their Close Cover Before Striking EP. Posted by: Neil at January 20, 2005 09:18 AMI don't know the Bright Eyes disc very well, but I absolutely love the track "Waste of Paint". Don't be scared off by its long run-time, it's worth it. Posted by: David at January 20, 2005 09:37 AMI'm very happy to hear you've hired Bill DeVille! You are well on your way to putting together my "dream" radio station! Posted by: Mary at January 20, 2005 09:53 AMGo with "Nothing Gets Crossed Out" and "Lover I Don't Have to Love" off of the Bright Eyes disc. Posted by: Rob van Alstyne at January 20, 2005 10:53 AMI haven't heard the new Luna album yet, even though I'm a huge fan, so I don't know what tracks to recommend. But, please play some of their songs! Also, don't forget the album Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips put out called 'L'Aventura'. It is absolutely dreamy. I have realized, too, that a lot of the comments in this forum have been geared to 'alternative' music. Including folk, country, electronica, even Japanese rap - it's all awesome and would blend together so nicely. Rev 105 used to segue from a Beck song to a James Brown song to a Pizzicato 5 song. It was so nice to hear different genres in a single set. The MPR morning show is so awesome because, they play such off the wall music that, together, are beyond categorization. What we need is a station that can't be categorized. That is what will make it amazing and mind blowing. Minnesota needs a mind-blowing radio station, indeed. Posted by: Lora Johnson at January 20, 2005 01:05 PMI am VERY excited to hear that Bill DeVille has been added to the staff. Bill is a music knowledge guru and a great on-air host. I've been waiting to see the announcement that he would join the staff, as he deserves a slot on air again! The station will be just perfect for him! So, congrats to Bill and KCMP. Hey Bill, how about playing "Going Underground" for your first song on the air? Or maybe "Where The Hell Is Bill" by Camper Van Beethoven? Posted by: BradSavage at January 20, 2005 02:02 PMany plans to include music broadcast on 89.3 at the public radio music source? On that subject, but moving off of 89.3, is there any plan to integrate the book source & music source? For instance, I might have added a luna and/or bright eyes cd to my book order today. Posted by: brian at January 20, 2005 02:14 PMLuna - Astronaut and Owl & the Pussycat Have the programs for the new 89.3 been posted yet? I'm wondering if any consideration has gone into getting the World Cafe as played on KUMD in Duluth? Also, my vote too goes for "Lover I don't have to love". Definitely play Bright Eyes. Off Lifted, I suggest Bowl of Oranges and You Will You Will You Will You Will You Will. Anything off the more recent CD I'm Wide Awake It's Morning is great too.
