« What should our first song be? | Goin' shopping » Steve Seel joins the teamJanuary 05, 2005 89.3 FM has just hired another excellent DJ, our own Steve Seel. Steve has worked at MPR since April 1999 as a host for both our national classical service and for KSJN and the regional classical music network. He's also an ace producer, much sought-after internally for a wide variety of projects. You may have heard him as our week-end overnight host on 99.5 FM in the Twin Cities, but you probably didn't know that Steve's music chops go far beyond classical. Posted by Sarah Lutman at 06:05 PM

I am wondering when the first day of broadcast will be too? I was thrilled to here of this new station and what it has to offer to it's listeners. "Radio Radio" from Elvis Costello would be the ultimate best first song for 89.3 Not only because it has Radio in the title, but also for the controversial history it had on Saturday Night Live. Lorna Micheals told Elvis not to perform "Radio" for fear that it would cause an uproar with the network, BUT in the middle of performing a replacement song he stopped his band from playing, said something like, "no, wait, let's play this one instead" they broke into Radio, Radio and Elvis didn't make another appearance after that one for many more years, something like 15 years. Happy listening and I wish the station and it's DJs all the best...... Posted by: Jeremy J. Freeman at January 6, 2005 08:36 AMWelcome aboard Steve! It sounds like you are in great company. I look forward to hearing you and all the rest. Keith Posted by: Keith at January 6, 2005 09:24 AMReally looking forward to hearing Steve expand his on-air repertoire! How Fun. Bravo for Steve and for MPR. Different subject: PLEASE tell me that Elliott Smith will finally get the air-time his music so richly deserves. If not in life... Posted by: SFG at January 6, 2005 10:26 AMI was very pleased to hear about Steve Seel's program Present Tense that he had at another radio station and I hope that he will be doing something similar on the new 89.3. He probably already knows about a great website www.sequenza21.com (The Classical Comtemporary Music Portal) out of New York City, but if he doesn't it has a great list of contemporary experimental composers and cd reviews. The University of Iowa radio station KRUI has an experimental music program called Malicious Melodies. Looking forward to great diversity on the new station. I will continue my allegiances to Radio K, KFAI, KBEM, and MPR (especially if they choose from the vast catalog of classical music that is out there), but it sounds like I and my husband will be also listening to the new 89.3 as well. Thanks. Posted by: Rosie at January 10, 2005 03:50 PMTook a road trip to Duluth and was reminded how good KUMD is. A lot to learn from there. But my favorite hope is for Steven Davis to return with his "Weekend Notes" of the songbook standards. Posted by: John at January 11, 2005 11:22 PMMr. Steve Seel - Count me as one of the human beings out there who is absolutely heart broken from you leaving C24. For several years now you have been my personal hero in classical radio -providing the perfect union of young charisma with encyclopedic knowledge to the pieces you present. I'll never forget how you introduced me from everything to Arvo Part's 'The Mirror in the Mirror' to the bucolic Sibelius 5. Every Sunday night I'd listen to you and come away excited at what I learned and anxious to hit the cd store the following morning. C24 has a wealth of wonderful hosts, but you Steve, I felt that YOU were speaking directly to me. I'll miss you greatly. By the way, do you have an e-mail address? I wish you nothing but the best at 89.3 FM. Bryant Manning Posted by: Bryant Manning at January 28, 2005 11:12 AM
