It's back! Lynne Warfel and Bill Morelock go to the movies with Roll Credits every Monday at 7 p.m. Tune in on Monday, Jan. 23, as Lynne and Bill offer up those good old reminders of the gravity-defying (Fly Me to the Moon), steadfast (I Believe in You), and dusty (Westerns!) reasons we all love film music.

Okay, so the Ebeneezer in me wants to humbug away the holidays being touted way too early. I get positively grumpy about seeing white flocked trees in stores right after Labor Day, but I will resist that curmudgeonly urge long enough to announce that Bill Morelock and I will be bringing you a holiday version of Roll Credits in "A Hollywood Holiday 2011" in early December.
We had been considering an all-Dickens extravaganza, but I'd love to hear from you about your favorite Holiday Flick and it's soundtrack.

The theme for Monday night's Roll Credits (our weekly show about the music in movies) is the music that delights. Lynne and Bill will play some instances where the music is better than the movie... or the opening sequence is the best part... or scenes from a movie, which wouldn't be the same without the music. Robert G. of Minneapolis writes:
"The White Tree" which emblazons the lighting of the pyres across mountain tops to call the Rohirrim to the aid of Gondor. Without this stirring sequence beginning ominously with a melancholy choir then evolving into a pizzicato theme driven higher & higher & higher to a hair raising crescendo it would have simply been imagery of mountains tops.
Ron M. of Bloomington writes:
The accompaning score for Margaret Hamilton as both Miss Gulch and the Wicked Witch of the West as seen, first as Miss Gulch rides to the farm to take Toto, and then in Dorothy's dream as the house spins is almost chilling--more so once you've seen the whole film. And what a classic cackle.

Kerstin V. of Duluth writes:
In the scene directly following Gandalf's death the song Bridge of Khazad-dun plays. The soaring vocals of Renée Flemming add a piercing sorrow to the scene that visuals alone couldn't convey.

The Romantic film comedies of the fifties and early sixties were memorable not only for their stories and stars, but for a kid growing up at the time, they amounted to some early imprints of that elusive quality that was soon to go out of fashion: elegance. By 1965 the Beatles had changed music (or maybe everything) and fashion was following. The studio system and its icons were fading: Cary Grant, Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn, Gregory Peck, Bette Davis, James Stewart, et al.
Although no adolescent or teenager of the time could safely suggest rock 'n roll wasn't an unalloyed boon to mankind, I felt the loss of something I never actually had. Identity to a great extent was being limned by clothes as well as taste in music, and I looked nostalgically at the age of twelve (the year of Sgt. Pepper) to a time when everybody dressed pretty much the same. It was the force of personality, of wit and the deft negotiations with power, and society and the opposite sex that seemed to make someone interesting. The characters that were Grant, or Peck, or Stewart (speaking from the guy's point of view) had a certain order to them, while the world I lived in was gaudy, democratic, anarchic (and admittedly, intensely interesting in its way).
So when I see The Apartment, or My Fair Lady, or Casablanca, or countless others, I'm struck by what they have in common, as different as the movie experiences are. Elegance was personality free to operate within a fairly narrow range of assumptions, and accessories. A nice, neat, theatrical range, perhaps. The world seemed a little simpler than it would be, Vietnam era and ever after.
In this edition of Roll Credits Lynne Warfel and I explore movie themes from romances of these years, and some more recent, too. But it's notable how many of the later romantic comedies, like Sleepless in Seattle or You've Got Mail, leaned on tunes from the forties and earlier. And of course in the fifties you had the movie composer who helped define the time, the always elegant, and sometimes quaintly jazzy, Henry Mancini.
We'll pursue that elusive elegance in Charade, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and the movies mentioned above, as well as The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Sabrina, Topkapi, An Affair to Remember, and Carousel.

A cowboy named Curley sings a hymn to a beautiful day. A Midwestern confidence man is at the top of his game in River City. Iowa. A man on a magic baseball field plays catch with his own father when he was younger than himself. A quietly heroic lawyer in a small southern town tries to deliver some difficult justice. And the second President of the United States asks, "Is Anybody There?" in the anxious hours leading up to the signing of the document we celebrate on the Fourth of July.

These are just some of the musical moments in the films making up the Fourth of July edition of Roll Credits. Lynne Warfel and Bill Morelock celebrate a particular American genius at work in Oklahoma!, The Music Man, Field of Dreams, To Kill a Mockingbird, 1776, and more.

The score was, according to its composer Louis Barron, a series of "bleeps, blurps, whirs, whines, throbs, hums, and screeches." The character Robby the Robot cost $125,000 to build (this was 1956), and was the progenitor of later iconic actor-inhabited robots like C-3PO and R2-D2. Forbidden Planet was the first science fiction film to take place completely away from earth, and presumably the first whose plot was loosely based on a Shakepeare play (The Tempest).
This week's Roll Credits, with Lynne Warfel and Bill Morelock, begins with Forbidden Planet's bleeps, burps, etc., but quickly moves on to the household name space movies it helped spawn: Star Trek and Star Wars.
We also listen to Bernard Herrmann's score to The Day the Earth Stood Still; John Williams pays "tribute" to two prominent European composers; and Bill deals with issues surrounding his apparent descendants in The Time Machine (the H.G. Wells' monster-species is spelled differently though; a saving grace.)
Hope you enjoy Roll Credits, the Sci-fi edition.

Listen to Roll Credits for Monday June 20, 2011:

Let the spirit of boilerplate movie trailer narrative guide us:
In a world dominated by the classics, an intrepid band of composers, speaking with a cinematic accent, emerges once a week during high summer, to evoke tribal tales of cowboys, and comedies, and Kansas tornadoes.
And, as you know--since they're your tales, and your memories--so much more.
On Monday nights all summer long, we'll steal an hour from the Canon of classical music, and get away to the movies.

Lynne Warfel, an unabashed fan (as she'll confess to all the world!) of film scores and their stories, will join me. And to get started tonight, we'll look into what was in the Hollywood water on the eve of World War II. The single year 1939 gave us Gone With the Wind, Stagecoach, Wuthering Heights, Of Mice and Men, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and The Wizard of Oz, among others. Steiner, Herrmann, Copland, Tiomkin, Arlen. And that's just the beginning.
Join us Mondays at 8 for Roll Credits, on Classical Minnesota Public Radio.
