A pianist at the barricades: An inspiring photo from the Ukraine protests

For the past three weeks, Ukrainians have been in violent dispute over the future of their country; specifically, its relationship with Europe and the rest of the world. When the Ukrainian government pulled back on preparations to make an association and free trade agreement with the European Union, protests in Kiev began and have continued to grow. Many protesters are calling for the replacement of the government.

The above photograph was posted on Facebook on December 6 and has since been shared over 1,800 times. The woman who posted the photo, Anastasiia Bereza, says the pianist "charmed everyone" with Chopin and other music, at least temporarily lowering the temperature of a tense confrontation.
