Jose Carreras has announced that he's retiring from his operatic career. Carreras was one third of the phenomenally successful Three Tenors enterprise; he battled leukemia in the late '80s, but was able to return to singing in opera.
It's not a complete and total retirement--he says he'll still sing in recital. Details here.
No opera--or possibly opera? Carreras's management now tells the BBC that the tenor hasn't completely excluded the possibility, if the right opportunity came along. Newer details here.
