Classical Notes

We Want Whitacre! (And Vocalessence Will Give Him to Us)

Posted at 1:59 PM on March 13, 2009 by Gillian Martin

Funny how things work out.

When Eric Whitacre started college, he'd never really heard any classical music, and he couldn't tell a quarter note from a treble clef. But then he "got tricked" into joining the choir. Next thing you know, he's a music major, spending seven years on his bachelor's degree to make up for all that he'd missed.

Now he's "the hottest thing in choral music," and he's joining VocalEssence for their "Eric Whitacre Extravaganza" next weekend. The concert itself has sold out, but demand for tickets is so high that Vocalessence is now selling tickets to the dress rehearsal. You can find more information here.

Read more about Mr. Whitacre (including why his years at the prestigious Juilliard School were not a total loss) here. (Click on "Press," then scroll down about 2/3 of the way to the Los Angeles Times cover story dated 12/15/2000.)
