Placido Domingo almost retired a couple of years ago:
"I was very tempted at the end of the last performance [of Tan Dun's The Last Emperor] to walk on stage and say, 'Ladies and gentlemen, that's it for opera.' But then I said to myself: 'Why? If you are in good shape, and you are box office, and you sell out the house, you should continue.' "
Mr. Domingo will celebrate the 40th anniversary of his Metropolitan Opera debut (and the 125th anniversary of the Met itself) with a gala program tonight. Read more about the 68-year-old tenor whose motto is "If I rest, I rust" here (registration required).
