The Way We Sing Now

The Way We Sing Now

Soho the Dog is the name of an always-lively blog kept by Matthew Guerrieri, a composer in the Boston area. In a recent post, he wonders about hymns: why some hymns get winnowed out, others not.

His explanation as to why some titles don't show up in newer hymnals? It's not theology; it's just that people can't sing them any more.

A few weeks ago I heard a children's choir from one of the local schools perform and was surprised that 4th & 5th graders were still singing in unison.

But I didn't realize how little arts education was available these days until I started looking for an elementary school for my daughter. I knew kids didn't get much music education anymore, but I was startled to learn that many schools have no music education at all. Ever.
