Visions of sugarplums

Posted at 11:35 AM on June 5, 2007 by Don Lee

Only 202 days left till Christmas. Only 87 days left to enter the tenth annual Welcome Christmas! Carol Contest. The Minneapolis music ensemble VocalEssence and the American Composers Forum have just put out the call for this year's entries. North American composers have until August 31 to submit a score for a modern-day carol.

As always, entrants must write for SATB chorus. As to accompaniment, the competition calls for a different instrument each year. This time it's an unusual and lovely choice, the celesta (which, by the way, would probably win a competition for most-often-mispronounced name in the orchestra).

The prize for the one or two winning composers is $1000 and a performance at VocalEssence's annual Welcome Christmas! concert in December.
