Yesterday's piece was Robert Schumann's song "In the Beautiful Month of May."

“In the Beautiful Month of May” is one of 168 poems set to music by Schumann in 1840. It’s the first of sixteen songs in a collection titled Dichterliebe, “A Poet’s Love,” and represents both the beginning of a new year and a new love. For Schumann, it also represented the end of emotional turmoil in his life, and the beginning of his marriage to Clara Wieck.

In the wonderfully beautiful month of May
When all the buds are bursting open,
There, from my own heart,
Bursts forth my own love.

In the wonderfully beautiful month of May
When all the birds are singing,
So have I confessed to her
My yearning and my longing.
