Pieces of Spring No. 11

Posted at 11:06 AM on May 12, 2007 by John Birge

Welcome May, and Classical Minnesota Public Radio's Pieces of Spring.

Every day, we'll play a springtime classic. Visit our online playlist to find each day's spring piece or, in the Twin Cities, listen to 99.5 every morning at 8. Enter the correct title here, and you have another chance to win fresh flowers delivered to your door for a year! Check back here every day to see if you got it right.

Yesterday's piece was the aria "When Spring Breezes" from Bach's Cantata No. 202. Bach wrote this cantata Bach’s Cantata No. 202 was written for a wedding (what a lucky couple!), though it’s uncertain who was getting married or when. It tells of winter giving way to spring, using mythological characters to illustrate the delight of love and marriage. It’s been suggested that it was written for Bach’s own marriage to soprano Anna Magdalena Bach, and that she might have been the singer at the wedding.

When Spring breezes blow
and waft across colorful fields,
Cupid is wont to steal out
to look for his adornment
which, is believed, is this:
that one heart kisses the other.
