Adopting the name Paul Creston did not make Giuseppe Guttoveggio world-famous. Still, here and there, he’s being remembered today on the 100th anniversary of his birth.
I am grateful to him for a little piece I know thanks to a 1975 recording--an all-American album by, oddly enough, the ever-so English Academy of St.-Martin-in-the-Fields. The disc ends with “A Rumor,” a six-minute piece that shows what might happen if orchestra musicians played a game of “telephone” by passing their message along using music instead of whispers.
Steve Staruch plans to include it in his show between now and 6:00 p.m.; it’s worth a listen.
