(Warning: This column is littered with clichés - starting with the title - see how many you can find.)
Last night's game was a microcosm of the Twins season. They started off slow making you think it was a lost cause, came back from the dead with an exciting rally, took a late lead, all before the bullpen snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
The local nine is now 2.5 games behind the White Sox with 11 to go. They face 22-2 Cliff Lee tonight and then head to Tampa to play 4 against the 1st place Rays.
As if things weren't bad enough in the pen, now Joe Nathan seems to have lost his groove. The suddenly mortal closer has blown 3 out of his last 4 save opportunities, has a 6.23 ERA in September and has walked 4 batters in his last 4.1 innings pitched.
Overall, you have to be happy with the Twins play this season. This team has done better than anyone could have expected, but the way they are losing - blowing so many late leads - really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
The good news is that the Twins do have a three-game home series against Chicago next week, but I just can't see this team closing the deal and playing October baseball.
