Redmond on the Road Trip, Fantasy Football & More

Mike Redmond may be the most entertaining person on the Twins roster. He can be funny, even goofy, serious, intense and reflective. I think our discussion before tonight's game is a pretty good sampling of the 37-year-old catcher's personality:

DZ: You guys have been back from the 14-game road trip for about a week, we all know the scores of the games, but esle what stood about it?

It was a tough road trip. Obviously, we didn't play very well. I think it was all right until we got to Toronto. Once we got to Toronto, we had the time (zone) change and guys were wiped out. Plus you're in Canada - there's not a whole lot going on there.

DZ: Did you pack well for it? Did you have any laundry issues?

I ran out of underwear on day 3 of the trip. I ran out of shirts on day 7. I just wore them over and over again. I ran out of patience on day 10. It was a long trip - I ran out of everything. You name it.

DZ: I heard you guys put together a Fantasy Football League.

I don't do it, but I went to the Fantasy Football Draft because everybody was building it up to be this really great thing - really cool. Basically it was 12 guys sitting around with a computer and nobody said anything. I was like, "Why did I come here?" It is the worst - it was pretty weak. It was a big let down for me.

DZ: Do you follow the NFL?

I've been a Seahawks fan since the 70s, I am used to a lot of letdowns.

DZ: I am a Vikings fan, so...

REDMOND: Yeah. They've had a lot of heartache too.

DZ: You guys are in contention now, you've been through it before - how do you balance the pressure of the pennant race and also just having fun because you don't get to do this every year?

I think mostly you just have to enjoy it. Like you said, I've been in the big leagues for 10 years and have only been to the playoffs twice. It's one of those things that doesn't happen a lot so when you have an opportunity to be a part of it, you have to enjoy it. When you have a lot of young guys on the team, I think that's what's important, just having fun playing baseball. That's it and at the end of the day, if we play well enough we should be in good shape.

DZ: It's been 5 years now since you won the World Series with Florida, what stands out about that?

REDMOND: I think once you win it, your perspective on a lot of things changes. I've wanted to win every single year, once you go out and win like that, it's tough to not win, not be on a good team. I've been fortunate enough that every year I've been here in Minnesota, we've been good - had a chance to win and go to the playoffs. That's been great. But, on the other hand, I want to win another World Series. That's my goal. There's a lot of guys in this room that I would love to share that experience with. I think to be able to do it with this group of guys would definitely be the highlight of my career.

Anytime you win a World Series with a team, you always have that bond. It's always good to see (former Marlin teammates). I think when you win like that it usually hits you later on in your career. It seems like as a player; everything goes by in a blur. It's hard to sit back and take in everything you've accomplished.

DZ: When you came over here in '05, Mauer and Morneau were in their first full (big league) seasons, what's it been like watching them develop?

It's been fun. They've come around amazingly well as players and teammates and leaders. To see what they've been able to do is pretty remarkable. I think everybody knew how talented they were in 2005, but to see them continually improve and work hard and how they've matured as people the past four seasons has been pretty remarkable.

Sounds like their fantasy football draft needs a little sprucing up. Redmond sounds like he was going to fall asleep.

Seems like every MLB team has a fantasy football league.
