Word comes from the Associated Press that Major League Baseball will allow umpires to check video replays on home run calls. Apparently MLB Commissioner Bud Selig will make the announcement this afternoon.
The Twins will inaugurate the umpire augmentation system at Oakland, along with the Phillies-Cubs and Rangers-Angels series.
For now, the AP says, the umps can only use video to check on "boundary calls" — whether a potential home run ball was fair or foul, or whether a deep ball actually went over the fence.
I guess this means we're on our way to automated umpiring, or, as I like to call it, Umpire-By-Wire™.
Naturally, this begs the question, how will the umpires find a way to screw this up?
Update: After the official announcement comes this tidbit from the AP — "Leaving the dugout to argue a call following a replay will result in an automatic ejection."
