Twins meltdown evokes memories of 1992

Posted at 2:25 PM on August 5, 2008 by Steve Rudolph (2 Comments)

Like most Twins fans, I went to bed before the seventh inning implosion in Seattle.

When I woke up and realized it wasn't a joke and the Twins really had given up 10 runs in the 7th inning, it reminded me of a similar meltdown more than 15 years ago that ruined a promising season.

The date was July 28, 1992. The Twins (59-40) were in first place (sound familiar?) in the A.L. West leading the Oakland's A's by two games despite dropping the first game of the series at the Dome.

The Twins sent Scott Erickson to the mound. Oakland countered with Mike Moore.

It was a phenomenal game...until the sixth inning. Down 6-5, the A's chased Erickson from the game, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six.

The Twins rallied, but lost 12-10. It would be the last time they held sole position of first place.

The next day, Oakland swept the three game and the Twins finished the season a dismal 30-33 leaving them six games behind the A's and out of the playoffs.

Let's hope history doesn't repeat itself and last night's loss doesn't leave any significant damage on this young team's psyche.
