Why bother?

Twins pitcher Carlos Silva left yesterday’s game early after slipping on the mound in the first inning and straining his groin. Had he looked at the Twins lineup card before the start, he might have elected to pull up lame in the bullpen.

Yesterday in Kansas City, Ron Gardenhire might have fielded the weakest bottom of a batting order in team history. Gardy’s “Murderers' Row?”

Chris Heintz - .220 BA
Nick Punto - .199 BA
Alexi Casilla - .250 BA

Entering the game, Heintz, Punto and Casilla had combined for one homerun and 37 RBIs this season!!! The Twins might have had a better shot sending Zingler, Scheck and Dall up to bat.

Needless to say, the Twins trio lived up (or would it be down?) to expectations and made Gil Meche look like the second coming of Cy Young.

Heintz, Punto and Casilla finished the game 1-for-7 with a walk and four strikeouts. The only hit was Heintz’s RBI single in the 7th.

Twins fans traveling down I-35 for a mid-September game deserved a better lineup and effort from this team than they'd find at a split-squad game in March. Unless Gardy was trying to show Terry Ryan just how base the cupboard really is, he should be ashamed of himself.

Ryan to step down

The Star Tribune is reporting that Twins General Manager Terry Ryan will step down at the end of this season, to be replaced by longtim assistant Bill White. Ryan will apparently remain with the team as a senior advisor.
