Has anyone been following the Cubs lately? They’re in first place in the N.L. Central and former Twin Jacque Jones is a big reason why.
Yes, the same Jacque Jones that used to play for the Twins, the same outfielder who was sort of traded to the Marlins last month, and the same former member of the Twins “Soul Patrol” who this writer suggested the Twins acquire to provide some punch and help keep Torii Hunter.
Jones, who was batting only .233 with 2 homeruns on July 1st, has hit .400 in August with 3 home runs, 9 doubles and 17 RBI and will likely finish the season with more runs batted in than Twins “slugger” Joe Mauer.
Jones also made a brilliant catch in the vines on Friday in a big win over the Cardinals, which resulted in a standing ovation by the Wrigley Field faithful who had lustily booed before each at bat only a month ago. Even his teammates have credited him with carrying the team of late.
But I’m not sure how the Twins would have found room for Jones in their lineup with Rondell White, Jason Kubel, Garrett Jones and Jason Tyner knocking the cover off the ball this summer.
Terry Ryan’s failure to make a move for Jones, who likely could have been had for a mid-level prospect, is just another sign that management is to blame for the Twins toils this season.
