When Dick Bremer exclaimed that Johan Santana “put the sexy back in baseball” during the intro to the Twins/Rangers telecast on Tuesday, most of us cringed. The bizarre statement however, had a much more profound impact on Santana.
“That’s just not right,” the two-time Cy Young winner said of Bremer’s remark. “Do you have any idea what happens when something like that gets back to the clubhouse?! Guys never let go of it.
“I don’t want Bremer to look at me, talk about me or come anywhere near me!”
Santana took a step beyond rhetoric this morning when he filed for a restraining order against Bremer in Hennepin County District Court. The Twins ace said he wouldn’t comment further on the pending case.
Bremer seemed shocked and conflicted, “I was uncomfortable saying ‘sexy’, it’s not a word I use off-the-air,” the Twins play-by-play man explained. “I’ve spent my entire life avoiding anything that could be construed as controversial, but, on the other hand, I always do what I am told.”
Legal experts say the case won’t hold water and the Twins hope cooler heads will prevail. “We’ll hold a team meeting and get this ironed out,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “I know the media is always looking for a new angle, but ‘sexy’?!. C’mon Dick.”
