"We're contenders now!"

Posted at 7:00 AM on May 31, 2007 by David Zingler

I’m not too snobbish to admit Major League is one of my favorite baseball movies, if not movies, period...(Spoiler Warning: Plot or ending details follow)...

Set in the late 1980s, the Cleveland Indians, assembled by a former showgirl owner whose goal is to re-locate the team to Miami, are a rag-tag outfit of has-beens, never-will-bes and convicts. Her cheapness inspires the team to undress a cardboard likeness of herself after each victory. Soon the squad, playing almost exclusively in Milwaukee County Stadium, goes on a long winning streak and films an American Express Card commercial in which they proclaim, “We’re contenders now!”

I guess that’s a roundabout way of saying the Twins are back. A spark was lit Milwaukee and the Twins successful formula of 2006 suddenly returned: solid starting pitching, timely hitting, a homer from Morneau, a stifling bullpen and, my personal favorite, the comebacks. Even last Saturday’s 9-8, 13th inning loss inspired confidence.

There’s no guaranteeing the Twins will win the loaded AL Central or even qualify for the playoffs, but they will contend and this will be an exciting season. Should be a great summer...
