Morneau willing to deal, instructs agent to resume talks
First baseman Justin Morneau said Sunday that he expects to resume negotiations this week with the Twins regarding a multiyear contract, and he's optimistic a deal could get done by the end of spring training.
"It would be nice," Morneau said.
Morneau said his agent, Mark Pieper, is scheduled to arrive in Fort Myers on Tuesday as part of his annual spring training trip to visit his clients. Morneau has asked Pieper to schedule a meeting with Twins general manager Terry Ryan to resume contract talks after the sides were unable to agree on a multiyear deal during the offseason.
I doubt there will be a multiyear deal in place for Morneau by the end of spring training, especially with the deal Joe Mauer just signed.
Given Morneau's past history of slumps (ie the entire 2005 season and first 2 months of 2006) and hot streaks (ie June-October of last season), Terry Ryan will most likely try to sign Morneau to a multiyear deal after next season, when Morneau probably wont be coming off an MVP season. Boy wont it be fun for Ryan trying to sign Santana, Morneau and Cuddyer to multiyear deals next offseason.
True, it's just a gamble. It all depends on how they play for the year. If Morneau keeps his numbers generally high but doesn't necessarily win the MVP again, he'll still command a bunch of money. If Santana keeps up his normal routine, he will be the prize jewel in all of baseball and probably be too rich for Pohlad's blood.
