Well, here we are. 1 week of regular season baseball left, with the Twins magic number to get into the playoffs at 2, and still 1.5 games out of first. If things stay where they are right now, the Twins would play the Yankees, who are undoubtedly a tough foe in the playoffs. Classic David vs. Goliath. (By the way... Yankees payroll: $194m, 93 wins. Twins payroll: $63m, 92 wins. $131m buys you 1 win?) If the Twins win the division (which is something they are shooting for) they would play the A's, who are one of the best teams since the break, are batting a league-best .298 in September, and may have Rich Harden back at full strength.
Who would you rather play against? Which team would give the Twins the best chance?
The problem with the baseball playoffs, especially in the AL, is that every team that makes it is good, and you don't want to HAVE to face any of them. And since we can't face the D-rays in all three rounds of the playoffs, I guess we have to plan accordingly...
My hope is that we win the division and square off against the A's with home field advantage. All three of those other teams are going to be tough, but I would rather start against the A's with home field, than the Yankees in the Bronx. Plus if that is the case, Detroit and the Yankees would have to knock one of the other out of the playoffs. Although I don't think it will be an easy go of it no matter what route we take...
The Twins match up against the A's better than anybody. The A's can't hit if they're not taking walks and our pitchers don't walk anybody. If we're lucky we can start with the A's and hope the Tigers beat the Yankees. Not to say the Tigers aren't a good team, but outside of Bonderman, their pitching staff is like facing Carlos Silva and Kyle Lohse every time.
I think the Twins stand a strong chance against the Yankees. I don't understand the common fear, yeah the Yankees are good, and yes it would be nice to play the A's in the first round. But, so be it, I'll take the Twins drive to win over the Yankees anyday. Yankees appear to be suffering more from inflated egos and injuries then in previous years. Remember what Tampa Bay did to them over this weekend.
Bring on the Yankees!!! Once the Twins beat them, it's all gravy......
