As you may or may not know, the baseball trade deadline is at the end of this month. Earlier in the year, we were looking to sell, but things changed after The Streak. Now that we are close to the thick of things, our plan is to use these upcoming road games (which we are terrible at, by the way) to tell us what direction to go.
Adding some depth would be a priority, and potentially boosting the starting rotation or a power position would be the next in line. Considering Punto's play as of late, it would be tough to find a better third baseman for this year. Third may be a power position, but I'll gladly take a guy batting .322 who hits a fair number of doubles and triples, can play anywhere, and does not (not!) give up a single at-bat.
Another thing to check out is the poor performers on other teams which might look to get replaced. Hunter and Stewart were shoo-ins for consideration for many teams outfield spots, but their current injuries may end up being the thing that keeps them on the Twins for the rest of the year.
Think the Twins should deal? Who should they get and who should they get rid of?
Well the rumor is that Burrell or Abreu could be going to Baltimore for Rodrigo Lopez, and I have to believe that we can afford a half season of pay for one of those guys and, say Lohse and Durbin. I mean the Phils are desperate for pitching if they're willing to go for Lopez. Either of those guys would stretch out our lineup extremely well and give us some good OF depth with Stewart, Hunter, and Ford all hurt.
Hunter's injury might be the best thing to happen for the Twins. Now that he's essentially untrade-able for this year, maybe we can get him to sign a two-year extension for 7 or 8 million a year, and keep him around Puckett-style to show Denard Span the ropes in a year or two when he's ready.
Wishful thinking on the Torii, his off-season value won't drop that much because of the injury.
My guess is that the Twins will do the same thing they did last year -- nothing......
There are probably some teams who could still see either of those guys for this year, too. If they're both on the 15-day DL and heal properly, they would be ready to go with plenty of time before the stretch run and playoffs start.
they won't be ready to go before the deadline though, and that hurts their trade value for this year.
two straight years with solid injuries will lower the market value for any 31-year-old. sure it's probably wishful thinking, but it's a real possibility
