Dropping like outfield flies.

Jason Tyner went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI in the Twins' 6-2 win over the Indians last night, after delivering a walkoff RBI in the 10th on Friday. It's a good thing that Minnesota's latest call-up has performed so well in his first couple of outings, because it looks like the team is going to need everything it can get out of him. Lew Ford is on the 15-day disabled list, and Jason Kubel's sore knees have relegated him to pinch and designated hitting. As a matter of fact, Kubel is probably going to be a lot more designated and a lot less pinch in the next few weeks, since Shannon Stewart re-injured his left foot last night and went back to cooling his heels (literally!) on the DL. And as if that weren't trouble enough, Torii Hunter left the game with pain in his own left foot, and is having an MRI taken as I write this.

Don't think that the infield has gone unscathed through all of this turmoil. Terry Tiffee's wife gave birth to twins on Friday, putting him on the 3-day BL (Babyfied List). And last night, with the bench as thin as it is, Nick Punto had to shift over from third base to center field for Torii, presumably on the theory that a guy who has a habit of sliding head-first into first base might be able to make a lucky diving catch.

A couple of weeks ago, we were all excited about how Minnesota had finally put together most (if not quite all) of its pieces and was turning into the team we had hoped for. Now, with Tyner here and more callups on the horizon, I'm having flashbacks to last year, when the Twins' 25-player roster looked more like a AAA club than a major league team. Hopefully, any other call-ups will make as much of their chances as Tyner has.

It could always be worse, though: At least the Twins aren't getting staph infections in their own locker room.

(Update: Torii to the DL; welcome to the bigs, Josh Rabe!)
