Off Day News: Twins to add Boone during All Star break

MINNEAPOLIS -- It didn’t work in 2005, but the Twins aren’t giving up just yet. GM Terry Ryan confirmed this morning that the team is having ongoing discussions with veteran infielder Bret Boone in hopes of adding him to the roster next week.

“Bret has been lifting weights, watching Tom Emanski instructional videos and eating his Wheaties,” Ryan explained. “He’s ready to comeback to Minnesota and take care of some unfinished business.”

The former All Star, who hit .170 without an extra base hit in a 14 game stint with the Twins last season, went to spring training with the Mets this year but retired a day before the exhibition season began. The layoff hasn’t tempered his confidence, however. “I can’t wait to get going,” the 37-year-old commented. “I am expecting a 19 homerun and 60 RBI second half. Comeback Player of the Year – here I come!”

Last season Boone manned second base during his ill fated Twins tenure, but the team has a different plan for ’06. “Boonie will DH, play a little third, help out the clubhouse attendants and try to do whatever else we asked of him,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “We’re committed to making this work.”

Liriano losing to A.J.

The overnight returns were not good for Francisco Liriano, it seems that the "Punch A.J." campaign rolled out by the White Sox is working. (After all, who doesn't want to punch Pierzynski?)

According to an automated e-mail sent out by the Twins, Liriano trails "by the slimmest of margins." So get out and vote!! The last thing the All Star Game needs is more White Sox!!!

The balloting ends at 5 pm CT.
