We all knew that Ron Gardenhire and enigmatic reliever J.C. Romero didnít exactly see eye to eye. When Romero threw a tantrum after being lifted late last season, we knew J.C.ís days as a Twin were numbered. Thus none of us were surprised when Juan Carlos was dealt to Anaheim in Decemeber. At the 66th Annual Old Timerís Hot Stove League Banquet in Oakdale on January 30 however, I found out just how delighted Gardenhire was to be rid of his once dominant lefty.
The manager who was in attendance with Terry Ryan, Joe Mauer and Jesse Crain, among others, erupted in applause when Ryan mentioned trading Romero. He then followed up that candid outburst by taking a few shots at the erstwhile hurler before settling into his optimistic spiel. Since the additions to his team have failed to address their greatest need, I guess old Gardy has found happiness in the subtractions.
