The Rookie League Elizabethton Twins won the Appalachian League Championship. It was the fifth championship for manager Ray Smith, who was also named the league's Manager of the Year for the fifth time.
In only his first year of AA ball, New Britain Rock Cats first baseman Daniel Matienzo is at the top of the league leaderboard in many statistical categories. He is currently second in hits with 146, second in doubles with 34, third in extra-base hits with 59, fourth in RBI with 87, and third in home runs with 23.
AAA second baseman Luis Maza was named the Twins' minor league player of the month for August. Maza batted .323 with seven homers and 25 RBI in 27 games. Class A Beloit RHP Kevin Slowey was named the pitcher of the month for August. Slowey was 3-1 with a 1.85 ERA while allowing 18 hits and totaling 38 strikeouts in 34 innings in five starts.
The "big" club has also called up some extra farmhands, such as right-handed reliever Travis Bowyer, catcher Chris Heintz, and the familiar faces of Luis Rodriguez and Luis Rivas.
As the Geek says, unless you tell me a minor league player's age, you haven't told me anything.
Matienzo (AA) and Maza (AAA) are both 25. Kevin Slowey was just drafted, and is 21. Ray Smith will be 50 in about a week.
