I haven't been posting much lately, been too busy watching a real baseball team play in a real pennant race. You know, it's no secret I'm a Cleveland Indians fan. Do you know it's possible for the Indians to end up with the 4th-best record in baseball, and still miss the playoffs? Nice.
Last night's 8-0 drubbing was particularly sweet, tempered only by the fact the Comcast Chicago feed to my MLB Extra Innings package was interrupted in the middle of the game, denying me the opportunity to hear the pain in Ken Harrelson's voice. But between the storms here and the incompetence there, well, "he gone."
So I had to watch the last part of the game on MLB's GameDay.
Now I'm not a big critic of Ozzie Guillen, the way other people are. But in the middle of a pennant race, in a 'statement' game that your main opponents are playing against you, do you really want message -- especially after you've let the other team cut 12 1/2 games off your lead -- be "we surrender!"?
Ninth inning last night, down 8-0. Pinch-hitter Joe Borchard (career .190 hitter), Pinch-hitter Russ Gload (hitting .196, and isn't this the worst name in baseball?), and Pinch-hitter Timo Perez (hitting .225).
Granted, all three would be a significant improvement over what the Twins can throw at you these days. But Ozzie: Never, ever quit! Until you actually do.
