Itís August now and it should be apparent to any semi-objective viewer that the Twins are not going to the playoffs. And thatís a good thing. The past three seasons the Twins have reached the postseason doing things their way. Other than 2002 however, they havenít come close to advancing past the first round and in none of those years were they viewed as favorites to reach the World Series.
Winning three straight Central Division championships is a respectable accomplishment, but it also allowed the organization to pat themselves on the back without addressing the teamsí glaring offensive weaknesses. After all, they are just the small market, feel good, ďLittle Engine that CouldĒ Minnesota Twins. We all knew their line-up lacked power and patience, but how could we dare question them after another playoff run? Itís Minnesota, weíre just happy to be mentioned with the big boys.
In short, the annual hanging of a Central Division championship banner on the yellowing white sheet in right field of the Metrodome became the opiate of the masses.
There wonít be a banner this year and the organization will feel the heat. We all need that once and awhile.
