Sports Illustrated has a nice photo gallery feature of 25 revolutionary American athletes. Baseball notables include Hank Aaron (#19), Curt Flood (#7), Babe Ruth (#4), and Jackie Robinson (#2).

ali is #1, how predictable. on my list curt flood is higher because his challenge led to free agency and thus, (for better or worse) the modern athlete.
jackie robinson has to be #1. unlike robinson, many of ali's problems were self-inflicted.
plus, boxing is just sanctioned assault..........
