Former Independence Party chairman and Ventura administration official Jack Uldrich dropped his bid for the U.S. Senate seat on August 7, 2005. Uldrich acknowledged when first getting into the race that he would not be able to raise the large sums of campaign money some Democratic and Republican candidates werealready compiling. Instead Uldrich said he'd run a "guerilla campaign," using the Internet and the media to force a focus on the issues. Uldrich is a former Navy intelligence officer. In the mid 1990s he ran an unsuccessful campaign to defeat long-time 5th District Congressman Martin Sabo.
