Rep. Urdahl won't seek reelection. Walz concerned about trooper shooting case

Another big retirement is coming in the Minnesota House. Rep. Dean Urdahl, the 11-term Republican from Grove City, says he'll leave after this term rather than seek two more years. And Gov. Tim Walz has been expressing concerns about the handling of murder and manslaughter charges against Minnesota State Trooper Ryan Londregan, who is charged in the killing of Ricky Cobb II.

Ruby slippers theft update; Snow in the forecast

The FBI has returned a pair of ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz to their out of state owner —nearly two decades after a thief stole them from a northern Minnesota museum.

And parts of Minnesota could see significant snow over the next week. MPR meteorologist Sven Sundgaard says there'll be a warm-up tomorrow before another shot of cold air on Wednesday, ahead of the precipitation.

Those stories and more in today’s evening news update. Hosted by Emily Reese. Music by Gary Meister.

Second man indicted in ‘Oz’ ruby slippers’ theft. Walz to release supplemental budget

A federal grand jury has indicted a second Minnesota man in connection with the theft of a pair of ruby slippers from the movie “The Wizard of Oz.”

Police are investigating an incident at a Bloomington mosque where shots were fired in the parking lot on Saturday night. No injuries were reported. According to police, gun shell casings were found at the parking lot of Dar al-Farooq Center after a verbal altercation in a bathroom.

And Gov. Tim Walz is set to release his supplemental budget this week.

March weather is warmer than normal in Minnesota

March weather is warmer than normal in Minnesota

Despite cooler temperatures forecast in the coming days, the month of March will likely be warmer than normal. That's according to climatologist and meteorologist Mark Seeley. He says the warm, dry winter of 2024 has counteracted the wettest December in history recorded at the end of last year.

Minneapolis City Council overrides Frey's rideshare pay veto. Walz signs compromise SRO bill

Minneapolis City Council overrides Frey's rideshare pay veto. Walz signs compromise SRO bill

In a vote of 10 to three on Thursday, the Minneapolis City Council overrode Mayor Jacob Frey's veto of an ordinance that raises rideshare drivers' pay and offers them more protections. The ordinance takes effect May 1. Uber and Lyft had threatened to leave if the ordinance was enacted, and after the vote, Frey said council members did not pay attention to the data in state reports or talk to all of the parties involved in the issue.

Gov. Tim Walz has signed a compromise school resource officer bill. It allows officers to use prone restraints in situations where students pose a risk to themselves or others. It also sets up extra training for officers. Last year, several police departments pulled resource officers out of schools because of liability concerns.

Burnsville shooting indictment; VP Kamala Harris in Minnesota

Burnsville shooting indictment; VP Kamala Harris in Minnesota

A federal grand jury has indicted the girlfriend of Shannon Gooden, the man who shot and killed three Burnsville first responders last month. Prosecutors allege that Ashley Dyrdahl bought guns for Gooden, who was barred from purchasing firearms because of a felony conviction.

And a symbolic setting figured prominently into an appearance by Vice President Kamala Harris in Minnesota Thursday. Harris toured a Planned Parenthood North Central States facility to make a point about the Biden administration’s commitment to preserving access to abortion and other reproductive care.

Satisfactory

Proper news in under 5 minutes, two times a day M-F.

“Sure” “ya”

The young reporters start every answer to a question with “Sure” and “Ya”. Very annoying and distracting. They all need to work on this to sound professional.

Harsh But Fair ,

Needs lots of work

Repeats far too many stories. This is not the radio; we subscribe and listen to every episode. Weather is a waste of time, too, since it tries to cover the entire state, making it generic to the point of useless. Sports are also not useful news; leave that kind of garbage to the people who also “report” lottery numbers and horoscopes.

Update: Now they’re including episodes of another podcast in this feed, meaning you either are getting even *more* repeats if you like that podcast, too, or unwanted stories here if you don’t. MPR needs to hire someone who understands what podcasts are, and I’m very close to unsubscribing completely.

Last Update: Finally unsubscribed after they wasted my time with a “viral prom-posal” story. I’m looking for news, not increasingly encroaching vapid social media content.
