Baltimore bridge collapse brings reflections of I-35W disaster

Federal officials are looking to lessons learned from the collapse and rebuild of the Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis as they respond to Tuesday's bridge collapse in Baltimore. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg talked about the Baltimore disaster on CNN. In the wake of the bridge collapse in Maryland, Minnesota officials say they're guarding against a similar scenario while planning the replacement of the Blatnik Bridge linking Duluth and Superior, Wis.

    BCA settlement; Spectro Alloys expansion

    BCA settlement; Spectro Alloys expansion

A settlement has been reached between the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the families of five men who were killed by law enforcement. The suit against the BCA said the agency did not follow the law when it did not turn over data to families after their cases had been settled.

And Rosemount-based Spectro Alloys broke ground today on a more than $70 million expansion that will greatly increase its aluminum recycling capacity.

Wintry weather continues to buffet parts of Minnesota

Wintry weather continues to buffet parts of Minnesota

The winter storm has transitioned to rain in southern Minnesota. But it still feels very wintery up north. Minnesotans should prepare for the possibility of an icy commute as the weather gets colder. Also, Minnesota lawmakers plan to put forward $109 million to help counties repay people whose property was forfeited then sold due to unpaid taxes. The move comes after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Hennepin County violated a woman’s rights when it sold her property for more than she owed in taxes and kept the windfall. This is the evening MPR News update, hosted by Emily Reese. Music by Gary Meister.

Satisfactory

Proper news in under 5 minutes, two times a day M-F.

“Sure” “ya”

The young reporters start every answer to a question with “Sure” and “Ya”. Very annoying and distracting. They all need to work on this to sound professional.

Needs lots of work

Repeats far too many stories. This is not the radio; we subscribe and listen to every episode. Weather is a waste of time, too, since it tries to cover the entire state, making it generic to the point of useless. Sports are also not useful news; leave that kind of garbage to the people who also “report” lottery numbers and horoscopes.

Update: Now they’re including episodes of another podcast in this feed, meaning you either are getting even *more* repeats if you like that podcast, too, or unwanted stories here if you don’t. MPR needs to hire someone who understands what podcasts are, and I’m very close to unsubscribing completely.

Last Update: Finally unsubscribed after they wasted my time with a “viral prom-posal” story. I’m looking for news, not increasingly encroaching vapid social media content.
