WCAL 89.3 FM Brings New Broadcast Service

ONCE THE SALE OF WCAL/KMSE IS FINAL, WHAT WILL LISTENERS HEAR ON THOSE FREQUENCIES?
During a transition stage, listeners to 89.3 in the Twin Cities and 88.7 in Rochester will hear the talented hosts and impeccable performances on Minnesota Public Radio's Classical Music Service. Because of the transition, we are happy to be able to add a new morning drive-time classical music program to 89.3 and 88.7 - a feature highly requested by WCAL fans. The switch will take place at 10 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21.

At the beginning of the year, we will introduce an entirely new format for the two stations that further expands Minnesota Public Radio's mission, vision and values.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE NEW MORNING CLASSICAL MUSIC PROGRAM.
This will air from 6-9 a.m. and will be hosted by Craig Curtis. Craig is a veteran public radio on-air host, music director and program director who has worked with Minnesota Public Radio for the past seven years.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE MORNING CLASSICAL MUSIC PROGRAM WHEN YOU CHANGE THE FORMAT FOR THE NEW FREQUENCIES?
This program will move to our Twin Cities classical music station KSJN 99.5. At that time, we will be bringing morning listeners in the metro area classical music that inspires and delights round-the-clock, seven days a week-except for a weekly two-hour visit to Lake Wobegon on Saturdays.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE MORNING SHOW?
Listeners outside the Twin Cities will not notice any change to The Morning Show. Hosts Dale Connelly and Jim Ed Poole will continue to be heard on all Minnesota Public Radio classical music stations from 6-9 a.m. weekdays. After 89.3 and 88.7 change format early next year, The Morning Show will take its unique sound to those frequencies. The classical music morning drive program with Craig Curtis will then move to our Twin Cities station, KSJN 99.5.

WHAT OTHER CHANGES WILL YOU MAKE TO THE CLASSICAL MUSIC SERVICE?
Over the next few weeks, we will be merging some of the best of WCAL and Minnesota Public Radio's classical music programming to create a classical connection for all of Minnesota. Our broadcast lineup features America's most talented hosts, and performances from the outstanding artists and groups of our region alongside the world's finest music makers.

Check www.mpr.org for the new schedule and a listing of stations where you can listen across Minnesota.

We are thrilled to have some WCAL hosts joining Minnesota Public Radio:
  • Bill Morelock, who will host classical music programming from 7-11 p.m. weekdays. Morelock will introduce listeners to Minnesota Public Radio's regional broadcasts of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Orchestra, and will feature a wide range of musical material on The Opera and on Open Air, Minnesota Public Radio's weekly evening broadcast featuring long-form music programming.
  • Steve Staruch, who will host his own program from 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays and create a special Sunday evening program of contemplative music followed later by the broadcast of Minnesota Public Radio's popular Pipedreams program.
  • Melissa Ousley, who will host her well-loved request program, Favorites on Fridays, which will now be broadcast throughout the region on Minnesota Public Radio classical music stations from noon-3 p.m. Fridays. She also serves as assistant music director for the Minnesota Public Radio's Classical Music Service.
Minnesota Public Radio classical music stations will also carry the following WCAL favorites:
  • Harmonia, 8 p.m. on Sundays. The program is produced at Indiana University's Early Music Institute in conjunction with WFIU in Bloomington, Ind.
  • The 93rd annual St. Olaf College Christmas Festival concert, a highlight of WCAL's holiday programming. This concert will be broadcast live at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5 and rebroadcast on Dec. 20 at 7 p.m.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO EXISTING MINNESOTA PUBLIC RADIO CLASSICAL MUSIC HOSTS?
You will still hear all of Minnesota Public Radio's classical music hosts. Some days and times may have changed, however. Please check the complete program schedule on Minnesota Public Radio's Web site at www.mpr.org.

HAVE YOU HIRED ANY OTHER WCAL STAFF?
Yes, we have hired WCAL employees in our underwriting and operations departments.

WILL YOU LAY OFF ANY EXISTING MINNESOTA PUBLIC RADIO MUSIC STAFF TO ACCOMMODATE THE NEW PROGRAMS?
No.

WHAT FORMAT WILL YOU INTRODUCE FOR 89.3/88.7 IN THE NEW YEAR?
This has not yet been finalized, but we can say that it will be a music-based service that is different from the programming on our Classical Music and News and Information Services, though one that still reflects the mission and values of Minnesota Public Radio. It will aim for a younger audience than our two existing services.

I USED TO HEAR WORSHIP SERVICES ON WCAL. WHERE CAN I HEAR THEM NOW?
