Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree (liberal arts or music preferred).
- 7 years successful and increasing experience in cultural programming management in classical music, music media, or related fields.
- Experience in planning, implementing and independently managing multiple projects.
- Experienced personnel manager with demonstrated leadership ability, supervisory skills, and knowledge of best practices.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Demonstrated passion for public radio programming, and an understanding of its potential for public service delivery, communications, audience development, service, and revenue growth.
- Track record of meeting audience goals and key business objectives.
- Knowledge of interactive media, publishing, and other electronic information and emerging communication technologies.
- Knowledge of Live Events as potential for audience engagement and service.
- Demonstrated strong professional initiative, bearing and confidence.
- Strong verbal presentation and writing skills.
- Demonstrated leadership and personnel skills and ability to motivate staff and others.
- Ability to embody and reflect the values of MPR.
- Able to honor high degree of confidentiality.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Master's degree preferred.
- Track record of creative programming in the classical music field.

The Director, Classical Music Programming is responsible for the overall vision, direction, and management of Minnesota Public Radio's regional and American Public Media's national classical music programming. MPR/APM is the largest producer of classical music programming in the United States both in terms of programming hours and listeners served. The Twin Cities metro classical station boasts the highest share of any classical public radio station and is a key contributor to Minnesota's broad and deep classical community. APM's national productions provide the quality benchmark against which other classical productions are measured, and are increasingly known for their innovation.
- Lead and develop MPR/APM's talented group of classical music managers, producers, and hosts. Foster a creative and productive work environment. Create development opportunities for staff and training to enhance skills and foster growth.
- Lead external relationships with musicians, performing ensembles, classical music educators, labels, and other external stakeholders. Seek out and fulfill spokesperson role for MPR/APM classical music.
- Provide single point of contact for cross-divisional teams to strengthen development, membership, marketing, and underwriting capacities for classical programming.
- Lead MPR's 18-station regional classical music network by hiring and supervising the network's Program Manager, and by developing and supporting the network's goals.
- Lead the national Classical-24 stream by hiring and supervising the C24 manager, representing C-24 in its partnership with PRI, and by developing and supporting C-24's goals.
- Lead national productions including St Paul Sunday and Pipedreams by hiring and supervising the Managing Producer, National Music Programs, and by leading the development of special projects and new program development in the classical group.
- Lead development of new media/new technology development and deployment in the classical media field.
- Lead development of classical events and outreach activities, in coordination with other departments.
- Represent APM within the EBU Music Group.
- Develop and administer department budgets, insuring financial controls and maximizing financial resources among departments and their personnel.
- Hire, supervise and manage direct staff through coaching, mentorship, performance meetings and on-going feedback. Involve HR on performance issues as needed and if termination may be applicable.
- Serve as member of senior leadership staff in the Content and Media Division.
